The US State Department reacted to the statements of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about his intention to declare the ambassadors of ten countries persona non grata and expel them from the country. This is reported by RIA Novosti.

“We have read these reports and are seeking clarity from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” a senior diplomat said.

Earlier, Erdogan ordered the Turkish Foreign Ministry to declare the ambassadors of Germany, Sweden, the USA, France, Finland, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada and New Zealand persona non grata. At the same time, the decision has not been officially announced yet.

On October 18, the embassies of these countries called on the Turkish authorities to release Osman Kavala, entrepreneur, founder of the Anadolu Kultur AS Cultural Foundation, who was accused of participating in an attempted coup in 2016. Osman Kavala supports religious and ethnic minorities, stands for a peaceful solution to the Kurdish issue and for the reconciliation of Turkish and Armenian citizens.
