Representatives of the European Union (EU) assured the United States of its commitment to negotiations with Russia in coordination with Washington. This is reported by the Financial Times (FT) with reference to sources in the association.
According to the publication, the corresponding promises were made by the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrel in a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. During the conversation, the diplomats agreed on the need for a “strong, clear and unified transatlantic front.”
FT writes that some European officials were surprised by French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal for an independent dialogue between the European Union and Russia and heard about it for the first time. “We were not notified about this crazy idea,” one of them said.
Earlier, Macron said that Europe needs an independent dialogue with Moscow on issues of collective security and arms control without mediation from the United States. “In order to be trusted, we need to conduct a demanding dialogue with Russia,” he concluded.
