Australia has abandoned the pursuit of nuclear weapons within the framework of the AUKUS alliance (Australia, Great Britain, USA). This was stated by the US Permanent Representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, RIA Novosti reports.
“Australia does not seek and will not seek to acquire nuclear weapons in accordance with its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear State,” Thomas-Greenfield said. She explained that AUKUS implies providing Australia with nuclear submarines equipped with conventional, but not nuclear weapons. At the same time, the NPT does not prohibit naval nuclear power plants.
In December last year, Russia’s Permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, called AUKUS a challenge to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
As part of the AUKUS alliance, announced by Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States in September 2021, the parties planned to exchange defense technologies with each other. In particular, Canberra will receive technologies for creating nuclear submarines from Washington or London. At the same time, the contract for the creation of non-nuclear submarines by Paris for Canberra was terminated.
